Hi! What are your views on the bellydance? And, do you think it is wrong for a Christian to bellydance?

Re: Bellydance
Thu, October 26, 2006 - 1:58 PMAs an ordained minister I see nothing wrong with it. I find it somewhat silly but nothing inherently wrong. The Bible is filled with examples of people dancing and rejoicing in honor of our Lord. Is there something particular about the dance form that makes you question it? -

Re: Bellydance
Wed, November 1, 2006 - 6:09 PMActually, bellydancing originated in the Middle East. At weddings and similar celebrations, the men would be together and the women would spend time together. The women danced and sang in enjoyment of one another's company. (The men did the same.) The origins had nothing to do with being sexy or seductive but with dancing and expressing joy and being together in celebration of community events. -

Re: Bellydance
Sat, November 4, 2006 - 10:45 AMI agree. As a full-time professional bellydancer, I see nothing wrong with celebrating this beautiful artform. Once people are educated that it is not a dance of seduction, but joy & celebration, community and is a respectable art form as much as Ballet, Jazz, Tap, African, ballroom etc.
Dancing has been around for thousands of years, from the ancient Egyptians, to the Persians, Roma's, Greeks, Turks, Africans, Moroccans, Indians, Thai's, etc. Dance has been used for celebratory purposes from marriages, births, harvest, & worship. All are valid & beautiful ways to express our love of life and a way to give thanks for all we have. Dancing is just one of the many gifts from God.
I grew up studiying classical ballet for many years, tap, jazz, & more recently classical Indian (Kuchipudi) & now Raks Sharqui (the oriental name for belly dance). I also for many years while in school was a Liturgical Dancer at my church for many celebrations. Those memories are some of the most beautiful I have had from church. Not to mention my vocal solos that at times have brought people to tears & helped them reach a higher level of prayer (so I am told). There is nothing that can compare to that gift that is freely given. That is a reflection of God working in me to help others.
As for my bellydance, every performance I do is "Family Friendly" and suitable for children to grandparents. I work with numerous private parties & in restaurants & the people are from many cultures and all of them get their children up dancing and the grandparents dance too! As a professional I also understand that some cultures/people are more conservative than others, so I adjust accordingly. Be it the music, costuming (I can be fully covered if necessary) or I can be in a beautiful 2 piece costume (bedlah) with the stomach exposed. Every performance is customized for my clients & great care & dedication to representing this artform comes first. There are so many misconceptions out there about bellydancing, that it's our inherent resonsibility to educate others & help to elevete this artform to those more "recognized" by the populous. And yes, I've even done shows at chuches at the pastors/Ministers request!

Re: Bellydance
Sat, October 27, 2007 - 2:02 AMAbsolutely not...There is nothing more beautiful than dancing for the Lord. Take the time and visit a Messionic Christian Church. I am sure in the days of King David and King Solomon many danced for the Lord. Is all in the eye of the beholder also. And what is in one's heart that veiws a woman that dances for the glory of the Lord.. God Bless you Jamie..and dance, dance , dance....And Praise God that you do.

Re: Bellydance
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 5:54 PMI am a Christian and a beginning bellydancer. I love the beauty of the dance and the costumes. There are many bellydancers that are also liturgical dancers in their church using the same techniques. This is actually very compatible since bellydance is Middle Eastern folk dance. After all, King David danced before the Lord and he was a man after God's own heart. -

Re: Bellydance
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 7:56 PMHi Jamie,
I think, like anything we do in life, it's about our purpose and intentions. There are many stereotypes and misconceptions regarding bellydancing, and so there is a certain amount of educating that you may have to do. However, there will be some people (mostly men at least from my personal experience) who don't understand it and/or only see sex, and not the beauty and skill it requires. Also, when in doubt, pray and the Lord will answer :D
